Blueberries

For those of you who were considering going blueberry picking at one of Michigan's many blueberry farms (and I highly recommend that you do so), peak season is right now. That means that the majority of the berries on the bushes are ripe and large. If you decide to put it off until later, even a week or two later, the ripe berries will be fewer and smaller, and it will take you twice as long to fill your buckets as it would if you picked them this week.

As for a place to go, all you have to do is type in "blueberries" near "Kalamazoo" into local.google.com and you will find several to choose from. I went to the Leduc farm a couple miles south of M-43 (about 20 minutes away), and found the largest blueberry fields I have ever seen. They will provide you with buckets lined with plastic bags (you keep the plastic bags). If you have never gone picking before, just to give you an estimate of time, it took me a little less than 2 hours to pick about 13 pounds of them--2 buckets.
